Drawing on probably one of the richest and most curious sources on the histories of Gorizia of yesteryear(R.M. Cossar, Gorizia d’altri tempi), we learn about the traditions that revolved around Christmas time.
There was a large majolica vase from the old Ieran Offelleria, located in the eighteenth century on Via del Rastello and later moved to Piazza Grande (now Piazza della Vittoria), which confectioner Domenico Pordon displayed in his window. On the container, which is currently kept by the Provincial Museums of Gorizia, it still reads “MOSTARDA SOPRAFINA”: in fact, at Christmas every family had on its table a “bucket” (mastelùt) of Gorizia mustard, which was purchased first from Sandpichler’s candied fruit factory on Customs Street and then from Honoré Jourdan’s.
