It’s been centuries, in fact more than a millennium, that people have been talking about Gorizia! It seems that our history began in 1001; we find evidence of this in an ancient document, a diploma issued by Emperor Otto III in Ravenna on April 28 of that year. Here is the passage in which Gorizia is mentioned:
“In the name of the holy and indivisible
Trinity, Otto III by the grace of God
Emperor Augustus of the Romans.
[…]by this imperial diploma
we grant, donate and
transfer […] to the dominion of the
Aquileian Church and its
Rector the Patriarch […] half of a
villa which in the language of the Slavs
is called Gorizia […]” (“Villa
quae Sclavorum lingua vocatur
Goriza”).
P.S. the sphere you see in the image looks just like this document! It is located somewhere in what was once Cathedral Square.
