Leonardo of Gorizia (1444 – April 12, 1500) was the last count of this city. In 1478 he had married Paola Gonzaga but, without heirs, left everything to the Habsburgs.
The one in the picture is not the only memorial dedicated to him! You should know that his heir, Maximilian I of Habsburg, also wished to pay homage to him by commissioning Christoph Geiger to make another cenotaph, which he executed between 1506 and 1507, now in the church of St. Andrew in Lienz.
The cenotaph in Gorica, however, is older: it had in fact been made by Vito da Brescia in 1497, and is full of curious details.
To visit it, one only needs to enter the cathedral of Gorizia and walk down its left aisle to the end: one thus enters what is now called the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.
